What is an Asset?

In compliance terms (and specifically under ISO 27001 Clause 8), an asset is any item of value to the organisation that supports information systems, service delivery, or operations. This includes:

- Hardware (e.g. laptops, servers, mobile devices)

- Software (e.g. cloud platforms, databases, applications)

- Data (e.g. customer records, intellectual property)

- People (e.g. key personnel, administrators)

- Facilities (e.g. offices, data centres)

Each of these assets needs to be identified, classified, protected, and reviewed as part of your Information Security Management System (ISMS) or Quality Management System (QMS).
